STORY

While squash looks forward, new generations enjoy our great sport, and new champions are crowned on the latest club and showcourts, we have a long heritage too. One that stretches back to the 1850’s.

The World Squash Library has been initiated as an independent ‘not-for-profit’ organisation to ensure that the books, magazines, championship programmes and other information can be brought together in one place to be freely available for current players, media, Federations, students – anybody who wants information on the long or near past. Equally importantly for future generations too.

This can be via Email (using the Email address, below), through the items that will be digitalised, or even in person.

Spotlights and features will be added to the site regularly.

WSL can never be complete, but over the coming years we will be getting as close as possible!

Mahmoud Karim ‘The Magician’ 1949

In April 1949 World Sports magazine featured a profile of men’s British Open title holder Mahmoud Karim. It featured the details of how injury and delay characterised his first win in 1947. The magazine also carried this superb colour photo of Karim. (From the Bas van Hoorn collection).

Forming the World Federation

The first step towards forming a world body for squash was taken at a meeting hosted by the SRA in London in January 1966. Here is the communique issued by the SRA. at the conclusion of the first day of the International Conference.
