STORY

While squash looks forward, new generations enjoy our great sport, and new champions are crowned on the latest club and showcourts, we have a long heritage too. One that stretches back to the 1850’s.

The World Squash Library has been initiated as an independent ‘not-for-profit’ organisation to ensure that the books, magazines, championship programmes and other information can be brought together in one place to be freely available for current players, media, Federations, students – anybody who wants information on the long or near past. Equally importantly for future generations too.

This can be via Email (using the Email address, below), through the items that will be digitalised, or even in person.

Spotlights and features will be added to the site regularly.

WSL can never be complete, but over the coming years we will be getting as close as possible!

Women’s World Open begins in 1976

In addition to the player profiles for the 1st Women’s Open in 1976, the event programme carried a two-page article by renowned British journalist Rex Bellamy assessing the importance of the introduction of a women’s world title while casting his eye over players. Here it is.

Jesters continue the British Amateur

In 1980 amateur status for squash ceased i.e. the game went ‘open’. Until then the British Amateur had been a prime world event, and the Jesters Club wanted to keep it going, albeit informally, as the Jesters Trophy. It continues to this day, from year one until recently spearheaded and managed by the late Peter Chalk. Here are the details, result and report of the first edition, played in 1981.
